Shirtless man arrested after being caught bathing in holy water while trying to set fire to church altar
A shirtless man was seen vandalizing a church by bathing in holy water and trying to set the altar on fire, according to police in Ontario, Canada.
Hamilton Police said that the 26-year-old man of Stoney Creek, has been arrested on a number of charges after the drunken rampage through the downtown church.
The man was also accused of shattering religious objects.
The incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, which is located on Park Street North.
According to the police investigation, the intoxicated man and a woman entered the church, and once inside, they started yelling and cursing.
The man approached a large pool of holy water and began to wash himself. The man and the woman left. The man returned, and approach the altar with a glass of wine.
The man pulled out a lighter and began to burn the fabric on the alter. When officers arrived at the scene, the man was found on the floor shirtless in a state of intoxication.
The man was charged with arson, property damage, two counts of failing to comply with probation and theft under $5,000.
