Robin Williams, the beloved comic, is found dead in apparent suicide at his California home

Actor Robin Williams has died aged 63 from an apparent suicide, police in California said on Monday night. His wife Susan Schneider confirmed the tragic news and spoke of her 'profound grief'.

'This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken.'

President Obama has led tributes to the comic genius, praising the Oscar winning actor's versatility. He said: 'He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most - from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets. The Obama family offers our condolences to Robin's family, his friends, and everyone who found their voice and their verse thanks to Robin Williams.'

Mara Wilson, who played his on-screen daughter in Mrs Doubtfire, was amongst the first to pay their respects to the late actor. The actress, who is now 27, tweeted: 'Very sad, very upset, very glad I did not have to hear about this though Twitter. Probably going to be taking some time off it for a while.'

The Oscar-winning actor was known for roles in TV and film including Mork And Mindy, Good Morning Vietnam and Mrs Doubtfire.
