Panic and hysteria today over Ebola fears as soldier just returning from Liberia visits bank

A soldier, known to a few of the staff where he banks, visited a bank this afternoon in Abakaliki in mufti. Upon arrival, as soon as he was recognised and it was established that he had just returned from Liberia, there was panic everywhere.

The soldier (name withheld) actually came back to Nigeria on the same day as Patrick Sawyer, the first Ebola victim to die in Nigeria. So, whether they were right or not, the staff of the bank concluded that he must have flown in the same plane with Sawyer.

His relationship officer left the bank immediately "for marketing". The staff in other units where he went to be attended to did so from a distance.

As soon as he left the bank, practically all staff of the bank began taking turns to use hand sanitizers and wash their hands.

Although the man had no inkling what went on, the fear and apprehension that gripped everyone was a stark reminder that everyone is scared of the virus.

May God help us in Nigeria.
