Louis van Gaal begs Manchester United bosses for cash to spend after Swansea horror show
Louis van Gaal has urged Manchester United to break the bank on new players. The Dutch manager’s Old Trafford reign began with a devastating defeat to Swansea.
Goals from Ki Sung-Yeung and Gylfi Sigurdsson sentenced United to their first opening-day home defeat since 1972 and left Van Gaal desperately in need of reinforcements at the Old Trafford club.
Van Gaal’s message to the Glazer family and vice-chairman Ed Woodward was clear.
He said: “It is not a question of whether we need more players because I knew that before this game.
“I said the same when we were winning games in the US – and I know what positions we need those players in. But you have to buy only when the player can fulfil the way of playing that I ask. We have to wait and see. We could have won today also. But, especially in the first half, I saw a lot of players who were very nervous and making the wrong choices.
“These players have to get used to that expectation – because that is Manchester United. You have to cope with that pressure.
“It is very disappointing for the players, for the fans, for me and for my staff.”
