Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger praised departed defender Thomas Vermaelen - before confirming Mikel Arteta would replace him as captain.
Vermaelen slipped behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the pecking order last season despite being first-choice at the start of his spell in north London.
And after seeing his side thump Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at Wembley, Wenger praised the attitude of his former skipper, who has today completed his switch to Barcelona.
The Gunners boss admitted he told Vermaelen he could depart in May and said: "He behaved outstandingly and with dignity. I'm grateful for him and wish him well."
Arteta - who led the side out at Wembley - has been confirmed as the new skipper while Per Mertesacker has been promoted to vice-captain.
