Steven Gerrard reportedly set to leave Liverpool for MLS

According to Paul Joyce of the Express, Steven Gerrard will decline Liverpool's offer of a new contract in order to pursue other opportunities. The Times and Liverpool Echo are also reporting the same. Gerrard's contract ends in June, and Major League Soccer appears to be his most likely destination. An announcement on Gerrard's future is expected shortly.

Interest in Gerrard will be high, with just about every MLS club with an open Designated Player slot almost certainly willing to bring him on. The league is in negotiations with the players over a new CBA that's likely to increase the salary cap, so between that and a new TV deal, Gerrard won't have any trouble finding lots of potential suitors to choose from.

MLS will already be in season when Gerrard's contract expires, and he'll be in need of a break at the end of the Premier League season, so the team that signs him can only count on having him for a short period of time this season. Late-arriving DPs have historically struggled to make an impact, but Jermaine Jones managed to guide New England Revolution to the MLS Cup Final even though he joined after a full European season and a World Cup.

Liverpool is the only club that Gerrard has ever played for. He'll finish his Liverpool career with over 700 appearances, and has 180 goals in 17 seasons with the club. He's won the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and PFA Player of the Year awards in his career.
