Nicki Minaj: “I thought I was going to die”, as she recalls teenage abortion nightmare

Nicki Minaj felt like she was “going to die” after having an abortion as a teenage girl. The Super Bass rapper fell pregnant while in high school and admits that while she “wasn’t ready” to have a baby, her decision to have an abortion still haunts her.

Nicki, 32, first touched on the termination on her mixtape song called Autobiography, and then again later on her single All Things Go. Now, she has discussed her decision in an interview with Rolling Stone, as she said: “I thought I was going to die.”

“I was a teenager,” she explained. “It was the hardest thing I’d ever gone through.”

Nicki, whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj moved from Trinidad and Tobago to New York as a child and went on to study at performing arts school, LaGuardia.

As an adult, who has gone on to have a string of worldwide hits with the likes of Anaconda and Super Bass, she feels that her decision was the right one but that it has “haunted me all my life”.

"It'd be contradictory if I said I wasn't pro-choice," she said before adding: "I wasn't ready. I didn't have anything to offer a child."
