Why the reporting of the Ebola Virus outbreak by western media now is different from the way it was being reported when the virus was only in Africa

I laugh when I hear the news being reported these days on the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) ‎especially that reported on CNN, BBC and Sky News. They report it now so fervently and with so much vigour as if the virus outbreak just began yesterday.

When you hear them and other western news networks report on the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) today, when you hear issues discussed, you would think that these are novel issues that just began yesterday. It is really sad that they were not following the outbreak in Nigeria and Africa as they should. But now that people are contracting it in their countries, they now report on the virus more fervently and with a lot more vigour.

Last night Jim Clancy and Richard Quest on CNN were both discussing the fact that the nurse who just tested positive for the virus had travelled to another state or city and returned to her own state before being confirmed positive. They said that this has caused large scale hysteria and near panic in the US.

Last weekend, also on CNN, a medical doctor was being interviewed by one of the reporters (I cannot remember his name now) and to my greatest surprise, he said that the virus cannot be spread through sweat from an infected person. And I began to wonder where these people have been all these months that Africa has been battling trying to contain the virus. Is sweat not a body fluid? The doctor also said on CNN that you have to have repeated contact with an infected person before you can contract the virus!!!

The fact of tracing and placing people under surveillance should be relatively basic by now and it is something these nations would have learnt a lot about had they paid more attention to Nigeria and Africa especially when Nigeria was battling to contain the virus here. It is even more laughable that the US sent teams to Nigeria to be trained on how best to handle the spread of the virus when right from the onset, they bragged so much about their ability to handle the virus and prevent any spread in the event that the virus reached their shores.

God bless Nigeria... God bless Africa... God bless America

  1. You got it spot on. The United States sees herself as the world. That's why freak occurrences in that country are often termed as 'The world's biggest/tallest/shortest/smartest etc even if such things have existed or been going on in other parts of the world for decades. The time may have come for Uncle Sam to come off his high horse and perhaps pay attention to the rest of the world. It could save his life. Timely article.
