A major construction company lost three of their workers in a very sad event that occurred last week in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital. The company which is handling the laying of very large pipes meant to supply water from the newly constructed Ofrekpe Water Treatment Plant to Abakaliki many kilometres away, was at the final phase of laying the pipes when the unfortunate event occurred.
The excavator being used to lift the three feet in diameter pipes lifted one pipe to put it in place in the ground close to a high tension cable when one end of the pipe touched the live wire. This caused current from the high tension wire to pass through the pipe causing all the three people close to the pipe to be burnt.
One died instantly. Two others got burnt.
One of those who got burnt had his whole body affected, while the other, who had his hands on the pipe to steady it, had severe burns on both of his hands.
The two who got burnt were immediately rushed to the hospital where one died. The other one, who had just his hand burnt, is still being treated at the hospital.
One of those who died is related to my neighbour.
