A village elder has been arrested for letting a girl of 10 be raped as punishment for her father beating up a drunken neighbour who broke into their home.
Police arrested the elder in India who ordered the "revenge rape" after the girl’s father lashed out as the 25-year-old man who barged into their house at midnight and tried to molest the man’s wife.
But the next day the "battered and bruised" neighbour reported him to the village elders in eastern India’s Bokara district and the chief elder "permitted" the rape after deciding her "violent" father had to be punished.
The neighbour then dragged the girl, 15 years younger than him, into nearby bushes and raped her as her mother cried out in horror.
An hour later the mother managed to find her daughter, lying in a pool of blood, said police.
The girl’s attacker was also arrested.
